A brief introduction to changing a name by Deed Poll.

It has been possible to change a name by Deed Poll since 1760, but only a decade ago, just 15,000 people did so each year. Since the popularity of the internet has blossomed - over the last few years The Legal Deed Poll Service has helped thousands of individuals and families to change their name by Deed Poll, both in the United Kingdom and abroad. It was estimated by Q.A.S (the global information services company) that more than 150,000 people changed a name by Deed Poll in 2007 alone.

This website will not only provide you with a thorough understanding of the procedure to follow when changing your or your child's legal name in the United Kingdom, but also everything you need in order to change official documents into your new name.

In the UK it is possible to change a name at anytime and as often as you wish, so long as the desired name isn't intended to deceive or can be construed as being offensive or blasphemous.

You must use a Deed Poll to officially change a legal name; you execute the Deed Poll by signing it in the presence of a witness.

Normally, the witness can be anybody, however, the witness must be at least 18 years old, must not be related to you and they must not live at the same address.

As soon as your Deed Poll is executed, you must send your Deed Poll to all of the organizations that hold a record about you, for example, the Home Office Identity and Passport Service, DVLA, HM Revenue & Customs etc.

In the United Kingdom the Government does not regulate the amount that can be charged for drafting a Deed Poll - The Legal Deed Service was therefore founded on the principle that lower-costs attract a wider customer-base, thus increasing the organizations market-share but at a minimal cost to the individual consumer.

The fees charged for the services that we offer are the most cost-effective in comparison to the fees charged by other similar online organizations.

In recent months The Legal Deed Service became famous for "accidentally" changing Christine Hamilton's legal name by Deed Poll to Mrs British Battleaxe - this happened during the filming of the UK's first ever video giving instructions on how to legally change a name.

The massive media attention this attracted led to The Legal Deed Service being approached by Endemol the makers of Channel 4 reality show Big Brother.

Endemol asked The Legal Deed Service to legally change two of the Big Brother contestants' names as part of a live task. Finally, earlier this year Neil Hamilton (Former Government Minister) joined our team. As part of our work with Big Brother - Neil appeared on Channel 4 to confirm that Sophie and Freddie have legally changed their names by Deed Poll. Jamie Jackson summarized the relevant law as follows:

"As a general rule, by executing a deed in accordance with all the requirements of such execution, the party whose act and deed it is becomes conclusively bound by what he is stated in the deed to be effecting, undertaking or permitting.

Hence, changing one's name by Deed Poll is, henceforth, conclusive proof for all official purposes that the name change stated in the deed is actually that person's name. As such, it will be accepted by all UK Government departments like the Home Office Identity and Passport Service and the DVLA for inclusion in any official document addressed to or in connection with that person and will take effect accordingly.

Once someone has properly executed such a deed, he is, as a rule, estopped from averring and proving by extrinsic evidence that the contents of the deed did not in truth express his intentions or did not correctly express them, or that there are reasons why he should not be obliged to give effect to the deed.

Consequently, if that person subsequently changes his mind and wishes to revert to his original name or change it to something else, he must execute another Deed Poll to give effect to his intentions."

Jamie Jackson, founder and Chairman of The Legal Deed Service, says: "There are many reasons why people decide to change a name by Deed Poll, for example, a couple may decide to have a double-barrelled surname when they marry, or change their child's name when they separate, people of foreign extraction living in the UK may wish to anglicise their name to make it easier for others to pronounce, or simply for novelty, some people choose to change their name to a 'fun name' such as James Bond.

Our clients can rest assured safe in the knowledge that all relevant employees deployed within our organization have undergone extensive training and thus fully understand the law pertaining to a change of name."

Tongue Twisting Name Change Goes Back Four Generations

 By Rebecca Appleton.

Matthew Ryan, from Surbiton changed his name to "Levi Samuel Matthew McBride Hanna Bailie Hamilton Martin Jarvis Whitmey Leggett Karoubi Mesguich Chouraqui Chouraqui Ferguson Miller Grimshawe Ryan".

He used the easy four step name change application on The Legal Deed Service web site. The formerly Mr Ryan has been studying his family history through genealogy for some time along with other relatives.

The hobby is one that various family members have contributed too over the years and played a significant role in Mr Ryan's new name. He said, "The sixteen last names are the surnames of my great, great, great grandparents. I thought that it would be quite nice to celebrate the fact that I'd gotten that far in my research and change my name to reflect all the different parts of my ancestry.

"Various parts of my family have been chasing our ancestry for a number of years. Relations on my dad's side have done quite a bit and on some particular lines, we've gone back quite far. I think on average we've got around four generations back."
Thousands of Briton's change their name each year but none coming through the Legal Deed Service doors have recounted a tale that reaches so far back into the mists of time. Jamie Jackson, Chief Executive of the Legal Deed Poll Service said, "When the name change came in via our web site I thought, 'here we go again with a crazy name change' but after hearing Matthew's story I was touched by how much effort has gone into choosing his new name.

"Very often we will help clients change a name by deed poll to that of new partners, back to maiden names after a relationship break down or change a child's name from something that has gone out of fashion but I think this is the first time that four generations of a single family have all had a hand in fashioning a wonderful new name!"

The £10 name change specialists are no strangers to crazy new monikers after helping former MP's wife Christine Hamilton change her name to Mrs British Battleaxe. The Legal Deed Service also helped a second man from Surrey change his name to Animal Stephen Leonidas, Floyd, Mayweather, McManus Edmunds last year. Stephen Edmunds of Fordwater Road, Chertsey, Surrey changed his first name to Animal after a school nickname, which stuck after he bit a fellow classmate. Animal set up a Facebook group called 'If 5000 people join this group I'll change my first name to Animal' before completing the deed poll in December 2008.

As with all deed polls, the name change is legally binding and can be used on documents such as driving licenses, passports and bank accounts. Mr Ryan has confirmed that he will change his name on his driving license and passport when they are due for renewal.
